A book that recently came into my hands:
The phonetic translations are something else (the French ones appear to have been written equally in Cockney and Essex dialect). This is the sort of publication responsible for Corporal Jones shouting ‘Handy hock!’ Perhaps something similar was circulated among troops at the Battle of Omdurman.
